DIETARY Q&A

What is Creme Fraiche?

Pico’s version of sour cream.  It’s French.

What is Cotija?

Pico’s go-to cheese.  It’s a firm, salty, white cheese.  It is nothing scary, spicy, or blue and you should try it!

What is Lizano?

Lizano is a sauce used as a condiment in Costa Rica much like we use ketchup in the USA.  Its ingredients include water, sugar, salt, and various vegetables and spices.

Are your Costa Rican black beans vegetarian?

No, they contain bacon, lots of bacon.

Do you UTILIZE local food sources?

Yes, we use local businesses whenever the season allows.  On any given day, the following items may be sourced locally: strawberries, soft shell crab, tomatoes, corn, arugula, lettuce, red pepper, jalapeño, and various melons.  We also source certain items locally for our specials, like scrapple, chorizo, apples, micro greens, and sweet potatoes.

What local sources do you use?

Seafield Farm in Cape Charles, VA

Perennial Roots Farm in Accomac, VA

M&C Vessey Farm in Westover, MD

Martin’s Crab House in Saxis, VA

We are always looking for local businesses to source from.  If you are a farm or local business who would like to start a relationship with us, please contact us!

I'm allergic to _________. What can I eat?

*Always alert the cashier to any serious dietary restrictions.* Here are the most common allergies we see at Pico Taqueria.  If you have an allergy not listed here, please alert the cashier upon ordering, and they will be able to tell you what you can and cannot eat.

  • Peanut - Our regular menu is peanut-free and we do not use peanut oil. Please ask about our specials.

  • Tree Nut - Our regular menu is nut-free and we do not use nut oils. Please ask about our specials.

  • Coconut - Our regular menu is coconut free and we do not use coconut oil. The coconut shrimp taco is a very popular special; please tell us about a coconut allergy.

  • Gluten Intolerance- Our corn tortillas are gluten free, but are cooked on the same flat top as the flour tortillas. Our sides and salads are gluten free, however, ask about chips, because we sometimes have specials with gluten that are fried in the same fryer as the chips

  • Celiac Disease- Our bowls and salads are great options as all of the tortillas for tacos are cooked on the same flat top. Our sides and salads are gluten free, however, ask about chips, because we sometimes have specials with gluten that are fried in the same fryer as the chips

  • Soy - Our recipes and fryer use olive and vegetable oils, but we occasionally use soy sauce in our specials. Please tell us about a soy allergy.

  • *Fish and Shellfish* - Shrimp is cooked on the same flat-top grill as some of the other meats. Crabs (and sometimes coconut shrimp and oysters) are fried in the same fryer with our tortilla chips. For this reason, we suggest that folks with fish and shellfish allergies get a taco, taco bowl or a salad with chicken, as it does not go onto the flat top grill with shrimp. We apologize for any inconvenience!

Pico’s kitchen is small.  We do our best to accommodate a wide range of allergies.  We will never pressure you to order anything you are not comfortable with, and please don't pressure us into making something we are not comfortable serving to you. ❤
